Protein At Lunch Changes The Afternoon

Of everything discussed across this site, the change with the largest effect for the least money is what lunch is made of. It is worth writing down plainly even on a site that sells a supplement, because pretending otherwise would make everything else here less believable.

What happens with a carbohydrate-only lunch. A sandwich, a packet of crisps, a drink. Glucose rises quickly, insulin responds in proportion, and the come-down two hours later is the familiar flat patch. That flat patch is a large part of what people are describing when they talk about the afternoon sugar pull.

What changes when protein and fibre come with it. The rise is gentler and slower. The insulin response is proportionate to it. The dip afterwards is smaller. None of this requires special food and none of it requires measuring anything.

Practical versions of the same lunch. Add eggs, tinned fish, chicken, beans or cheese to what you already eat. Keep the bread; add something to it. Put a piece of fruit or a handful of vegetables next to it rather than a second carbohydrate. Drink water rather than a sweet drink alongside.

The ten minute walk. Walking for ten minutes after eating does more for the shape of that curve than most things sold in a bottle. The reason is unglamorous: working muscle takes up glucose, so some of the meal goes there instead of circulating.

Where the capsule fits. Alongside all of that. A supplement taken next to an unchanged lunch is doing the smallest job in the room, and any page telling you a capsule makes the lunch irrelevant is selling you something that does not exist.
